Simple Mail Transfer Protocol

The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is the application protocol used to transfer email. It was initially designed for the NCP protocol suite; before its creation, email was transferred by an adjunct to FTP. It has since been updated to function over TCP, for use on the Internet.
