1.0     INTRODUCTION

        This document defines the extent of operational compatability between
        the VAX 11780 hardware, the VAX 11780 MICROCODE, the VAX DIAGNOSTICS
        and the VIRTUAL MEMORY OPERATING SYSTEM (VMS).

        This document will be updated on a quarterly basis and released on
        microfiche in the VAX Library and Speed Bulletin.

        The information in this document is cumulative and will provide an
        archival tracking of the evolution of the 11780 system.  For more
        detailed information of the hardware, software and firmware revision
        levels, refer to the following pages.

        11782 System Rev 01 reflects what was shipped at FCS (June 1982).

        Refer to 11780 System Rev 07 for revision information for the
        11782 processors.

2.0     11780 REVISION CONTROL

        The 11780 Revision Control defines the collection of option revisions
        which are compatible with each other and a given set of VMS and
        Diagnostic Versions.

        The 11780 Revision Control will take the form:  "11780-XXN"

                where XX = Revision Number
                       N = Revision Letter

        The revision control changes will be noted in the following manner:

                11780-XXN
                      | |______ Increments if the change is non-functional

        Functional changes are those which cause modifications to
        diagnostics, VMS or significant specification changes to the
        components of the system.

2.1     11780 SYSTEM ID REGISTER

        The 11780 System Revision will be wired into the System
        ID Register along with Plant code and Serial Number. This will allow
        the software to determine which ECO's have been installed into
        the system it is running on and report possible incompatabilities.

        The System ID Register is accessable by reading ID register 03 from
        the console or executing an MFPR instruction from processor register
        number 3E. The register format is as follows:

2.2     11780 SYSTEM REVISION

        The chart below lists the compatible hardware option revision levels
        for each system revision.  Note that only the kernal options (i.e.
        the KA, MS, DW), the backplane and the console ucode increment the
        11780 system revision.  The options below the dotted line DO NOT
        affect the system level and are tracked at the unit revision only.

        NOTE that the RH780 and FP780 have been removed from the 11/780 kernel
        and will be tracked at the Unit Revision level.

        Also note that the minimum System Rev supported in the field is
        "04".

        This section contains effectivity dates and summaries of each system
        revision change.

        Any known diagnostic, microcode or VMS revision requirements for each
        revision are also noted.

        11780-4.0 REVISION SUMMARY
        --------------------------
        o  Creation date is September 1, 1980

        o  Changes to KA780 option revision only.  Fixes MULP instructions.

        o  New WCS Pattern (WCS122) required for this hardware revision -
           EVNDX V.0 (released Sept 80) contains WCS122.

1/85    o  VMS V4 requires MINIMUM WCS 123.

        o  VMS V4 also requires minimum diagnostic rel. 18 (Jan. 85).

        11780-5.0 REVISION SUMMARY

3.0     11782 REVISION CONTROL

        The 11782 Revision Control follows the same format as the 11780, with
        one exception - the 11782 does not utilize a Sys ID Register.  The
        revision levels of the 11782 will be tracked via this document.

        The revision level of the 11782 system will be affected by changes
        to: (1) the 11780 System Rev and (2) the MA780 unit revision.  The
        MA780 is part of the 11782 kernal and therefore, a functional change
        to the MA780 will increment the 11782 revision level.

3.2     11782 SYSTEM REVISION DESCRIPTIONS

        This section contains effectivity dates and summaries of each system
        revision change.

        Any known diagnostic, microcode or VMS revision requirements for each
        revision are also noted.

        11782-1.0 REVISION SUMMARY
        --------------------------

        o  Creation date is 1 June 1982 (FCS).

        o  This is the initial introduction of system level control for
           the 11782 and defines the minimum revision level for FCS.

        o  Some diagnostics will not run under the supervisor - must have
           512K memory.  11782s are shipping with 256K.  ECO will be implement-
           ed in early Q3. FCO will be done in Q3FY83 to add an addition 256K
           (M8210 module) to the primary processor for all 11782 customers
           under contract.  This does not affect the 11782 system revision.

        o  The next major release of VMS will not support the 11/782
           system configuration.

           The maximum VMS release to support 11/782 configurations is
           VMS 4.7.

4.0     MODULE REVISION HISTORY

        11/780 modules are tracked by CS (Circuit Schematic) Revisions.
        CS revision is what is noted on all of the Option Revision charts
        in Section 5 of this document.

        CS Revisions are marked on the modules as follows: (1) brady marker(s)
        wrapped around the tabs on the module handle, or (2) stamped
        or scratched into the module handle itself.

4.1     PART REVISION - DEC STANDARD 012

        Engineering is in the process of converting the current system of
        module revision tracking to comply with DEC Standard 012, i.e. Part
        Revision.  Part revision will replace CS rev for purposes of this
        document.

        Note that we will not go backwards and change anything that already
        exists. As ECOs are written to 11/780 modules, Part Revision will be
        implemented by using the CS revision and adding a number to it.  Thus
        a module with a CS Rev of "D" becomes a "D1" when Part Revision is
        implemented, if the ECO is a non-functional change.  If the ECO is a
        functional change, the new Part Revision would be "E1".  This is more
        fully explained below.

        The new Part Revisions will be added to this document as the ECOs are
        signed off and implemented in manufacturing.

        New modules will be released from engineering with Part Revision "A1".

        ECOs will change Part Revisions as follows:

           1.   If the ECO is a non-functional change, which means
                that the old part and the new part are interchangeable,
                the letter stays the same and the number is increased.

                        i.e. M8270 Rev A1 to M8270 Rev A2

                A Rev A1 and a Rev A2 may look a little different but
                they are functionally identical.

                Examples of a non-functional change:  relayout of the
                module, manufacturing process changes.

           2.   If the ECO is a functional change, which means that the
                new part can replace the old part but the old part cannot
                replace the new part, the letter is incremented and the
                number is reset to the lowest available number for that
                letter.

                        i.e. M8270 Rev A2 to M8270 Rev B1

                Rev A2 is not functionally the same as a B1; we could
                be downgrading a customer's machine by replacing a
                B1 with an A2.

                A functional change would be a change that has VMS and/or
                diagnostic impact.  This category applies to all of the
                ECOs that are implemented in the field as FCOs.

        Part Revision will be implemented on all VAX processors, which
        will standardize module tracking for the 11/780, 11/750 and 11/730.

        Part revision will be marked on the modules in the same manner as
        the CS revision.


5.0     OPTION REVISION CONTROL

        The VAX 11780 Option Revision Control applies to logic modules and
        backplanes only. ECO's to Power Supplies, Cables, Mechanical parts
        I/O Devices, and the Console Processor do not generally affect the
        firmware and software in the VAX 11780 system. If this is not
        the case then a comment will be added in either the Option Revision
        Description or the System Revision Compatability section of this
        document.

        The option Revision Control will take the form: "OPTION-XXN"

                where OPTION = Option designator (E.G. KA780)
                          XX = Revision Number
                           N = Revision letter

        The revision control changes will be noted in the following manner:

                        OPTION-XXN
                               ! !___ Increments if change is non functional
                               !_____ Increments if change is functional

        Non-functional changes are generally new etch board releases or
        documentation changes but in some instances could be logic functional
        changes which do not affect the diagnostics or VMS. Functional changes
        are those which cause modifications to diagnostics, VMS, or significant
        specification changes to the option.

5.1     OPTION REVISION HISTORY

        The Option Level Revision History Charts which follow are summaries
        of module revisions released under each specific option revision. The
        Charts also include backwards compatability information indicating
        older revision modules which may be used with each option revision.

        Module types separated by commas are functionally identical. They have
        the same logic and are interchangeable. In some cases the module was
        relayed out to remove rework wires, or a change was made to a component
        or documentation which does not affect the operation of the module.

        The Option Revision Description sections briefly describe the changes
        which have taken place and list any dependencies on other components
        in the system.

           changes to "8". (WCS125 shipped in Diagnostic Release 24.)

        o  WCS126 is scheduled to ship from SDC in April, 1987.  This latest
           ucode includes a fix to the RET Instruction.  This fix
           was not included in WCS125.  There is no additional FPLA
           change required to support WCS 126.

        o  Fixes a multiple transmitter fault problem which results when
           an IS timeout occurs in the SBI cycle immediately preceeding the

            These FCOs should be installed prior to or during VMS V4.0
            installation.  Note that although VMS Release notes state that
            earlier revisions are acceptable, i.e. will probably work,
            engineering and product management have determined that the
            customer needs all these FCOs for acceptable cluster performance
            under VMS V4.0.

            Details of Cluster Rev D1 requirements were sent to all branch
            managers.

            Contact your regional/country FCO coordinator for ordering info
            on these FCOs.

            Refer to the VAXCluster Revision Control document for more
            information on Cluster Rev D1 requirements.

        o   Minimum requirement for CI functional diagnostics (EVGAA, EVGAB)
            is 1.1.


CI780-D1 REVISION SUMMARY
-------------------------

        o   Creation date is April, 1985 - Manufacturing ship date.

        o   Option Revision "D1" involves a change to the microcode only.
            A functional problem was discovered in VAX cluster testing.
            The CI780 did not conform to Architectual Specification
            producing "MISCELLANEOUS ERRORS TYPE 12 & 13" causing VMS
            CI--PORT RE-INITS introduced by V3.0 microcode.

        o   An FCO is being implemented to upgrade all CI780 options to
            Rev "D1".

CI780-E1 REVISION SUMMARY
-------------------------

        o   Creation date is September 1985 - Manufacturing implementation.

            The FCO involves a change to the CI microcode only.  The new
            microcode is Rev 5.

            The problem is seen under specific conditions in very large
            vax clusters--the CI780 interface will incorrectly recover
            from CI error conditions.

            An FCO was implemented to upgrade all CI780 options to Rev "E1
            in September, 1985.

            Rev 5 microcode can be obtained in two ways:

            1 - Over the ENET - copy VOLKS::CLUSTER$REV:CI780V5.BIN

            2 - Order EQ kit  - EQ-01365-01 (contains 780 ucode at Rev 5)

NOTE:   The minimum "supporting" version of VMS is V3.7 for the CI
        Option.  VMS is being tracked as part of the "Higher Functionality"
        rev-controlled cluster.  Refer to the Cluster RM document for VMS
        dependencies.

CI780-F1 REVISION HISTORY
-------------------------

        o   Creation date is July 1986 - Manufacturing implementation date.

            This revision change involved an ECO to the L0101 module
            bringingthe module rev to "J1".

            *PROBLEM/CORRECTION
            L0101-MK009      1.numerous functional errors ("arbitration
                               timeout", internal queue retry error").
                             2.Need a variable sanity timer.
                             3.Need to check the "valid" bit when
                               referencing a cache buffer description.
                             4.Correct documentation errors.
                               Correction is V7.0 CI microcode and 6 proms.

       Note that the L0101 rev J1 and CI780.bin rev 7.0 must be used together.

       An FCO is being implemented to upgrade all CI780's (CI780-F1-I-005).

            L0101 MK010   -      1. Paths crossed, "reqid" sent on path a,
                                    response on path B.
                                 2. Clock the transmit enable flop correctly
                                    to prevent cluster hung.

       This ECO involves two etch cuts and two wire adds.
       It brings the L0101 to rev "K1". Revs "J1" and "K1" are both
       acceptable in CI780 rev "F1".


CI780-AA/AB REVISION H1
-----------------------

        o       Creation date is June 1987.

        o       This revision changed the CI780 from "F" to "H".

        o       This revision change involved an eco to the L0100 module
                bringing the module rev to "E".

        PROBLEM/CORRECTION

        L0100-MK006    1. Original 140 mhz clock and associated hardware has
                          tendency to drift off frequency.

                       2. Existing wires caused by eco #mk005 cause extensive
                          manufacturing costs. the following corrections are
                          implemented by this eco:

                          1. Change 140 mhz crystal to new hybrid oscillator
                             (p/n 18-23940-01) and delete unnecessary hardware.
                          2. Phase in new etch to remove wire's on module.

        L0100-MK005    1. Major problems in the interface which would be highly
                          visible in large cluster configurations.

                          These problems include the following:

                          A) CI 20 self directed packet problem.
                          B) Arbitration problem.
                          C) SYNC detect pal could latch up under a flood
                             condition.
                          D) Implementation of the xtend hdr jumper was
                             incorrect.
                          E) Acknowledge turn-around and basic slot time
                             causing excessive collisions on the wire.
                          F) Correct trailer time to meet the spec.

                   1. The following corrections are implemented by this eco:

                        A) CRC byte counter reset now with (ILIB ABORT + INIT
                               FNC L) * - (ILIB INIT L).
                        B) First try flag is now incorporated to provide real
                           arbitration where the node is now synchronized on
                           loss of carrier and will obey the rules of dual
                           round robin arb.

                        C) New pal will be incorporated.
                        D) XTEND hdr jumper now functional.
                        E) Install a change to make alter delta time jumper
                           select A BASIC SLOT TIME OF 7 TO 10 CLOCK TICKS.

        *QUICK CHECK - (Module REV E1) L0100 with wire from a) e65.13 and
                           E177.13 B) E65.11 and E177.9

        DIAGNOSTIC EVCGD, V1.2 required for this eco.  Updated in diagnostic
        Release 26 (EVNDX 26).

                 L0100 jumper W1 (module rev E1) or S3 (module rev E2)
                 indicates the following conditions:

                 A) Jumper (W1) installed between e177 socket pins 11 and 12,
                    or switch (s3) open, disabled:

                   1) This makes the L0100 downwards compatible with rev D
                      L0100 modules, by maintaining the basic slot count to
                      the existing count of seven (7) ticks, acknowledge
                      turn-around remains the same as the original rev D
                      L0100's, and the trailer extension is not enabled.
                      With these eliminated, the eco'ed L0100 (rev E) will
                      maintain form, fit and function as the non-eco'ed (rev D)
                      modules.  However, it should be noted that the
                      following fixes will still be installed and be functional
                      in rev E, while in the disabled position:
                      new sync detect pal, CI20 fix, xtend hdr jumper, and XMIT
                      status bit 3.

                 B) Jumper (W1) installed between E177 socket pins 9 and 10,
                    or switch (s3) closed, enabled:

                   1) Basic slot time is now implemented to ten (10) ticks.
                   2) Ack turn-around change fully implemented.
                   3) Trailer extension by two (2) bytes, fully functional.
                   4) Arbitration and first try flag full implementation.
                   5) New SYNC detect pal, xtend hdr jumper, CI20 and XMIT
                      status bit 3, will still be fully functional as above.


CI780-AA/AB REVISION J1
-----------------------

        o       Creation date is May 1988.
        o       This revision changed the CI780 from "H" to "J".
        o       This revision documents the introduction of the L0118 in place
                of the LO100.

                PROBLEM/CORRECTION - N/A

                QUICK CHECK - Verify LO118 is installed.

                DIAGNOSTIC RELEASE 28 (EVNDX 28). Contains the minimum usuable
                diagnostics for the L0118 module.



6.0    SYSTEM REVISION COMPATIBILITY

       The chart on page 6 lists the compatible sets of hardware,
       software (VMS and Diagnostics) and firmware which make up a reliable,
       working 11780/11782 system.

6.1    11780/11782 COMPATIBILITY CHART

       The KA780 Microcode requires specific hardware revisions of the
       KA780, FP780 and KE780A options but is relatively independent of
       other hardware revisions in the system.

       VMS dependency on microcode mainly consists of bug fixes or VAX
       architectural changes.

       Microcode interactions with the diagnostics include communication
       protocols with the Console Monitor Program for Booting and
       executing particular console commands and with other diagnostics
       for bug fixes.

       The following chart indicates the levels of operational
       compatability and, as in the previous charts, equivalent revisions
       are separated by commas.

       11780 System Rev 7.0 ONLY is applicable to an 11782 system, as all
       11780 processors that make up an 11782 system must be at Rev 7.0.
       However, note that an 11782 system requires VMS Version 3.0.

       The next major release of VMS will not support the 11/782 due to
       insurmountable technical restrictions.
