The Apple IIgs (formally the Apple IIGS - the 'GS' stands for "Graphics and Sound") was the most powerful member of the Apple II family. It included multi-media capabilities such as sound, and had a built-in mouse. It was designed as an open system (unlike the Apple IIc); the expansion slots are compatible with those of the Apple II, Apple II+, and Apple IIe. It was down-graded to avoid competing with the Macintosh, and was eventually replaced by it.
