The File Transfer Protocol is a communication network application (the name nothwithstanding), used to transfer files to or from a server host system.

It was one of the first applications on the ARPANET (the first packet switching network), along with the Telnet remote login protocol. Although it dates back to the ARPANET, it has been updated to function over TCP, for use on the Internet.
