Microsoft Windows Premiere Edition is a preliminary release of the Microsoft Windows 1.0 operating environment, which shipped to testers in July 1985 to provide an early look at the Windows product, before the final product was finished and ready to be shipped. The final release was Windows 1.01.

Quoting Tandy Trower (Microsoft Windows 1.0 product manager): "But by the early summer of 1985, we were still not close to being done, so Steve declared we should release a preliminary release that I dubbed the "Premiere Edition", which we provided to key application vendors, analysts, and members of the press for feedback and in partial fulfillment of Ballmer’s promise to ship the product that summer." Source: [1]

According to Trower, the memory management code of the operating system needed to be rewritten at a later point in development:

"Then just at the point I was starting to feel more optimistic about wrapping things up the architect of the memory management code told me he found a critical defect in its design and would need to re-write it, basically rendering all testing to date useless. I pleaded with him to find an easier way, but after a thorough discussion there was no option other than to let him proceed and restart the testing process."

NOTE to users: A properly preserved and fully original copy of this release is available on this site as a "BetaArchive exclusive". See here for details..

==trueyanksfan's copy==
A user named trueyanksfan owns a copy of the original floppy disk set of this release and also provided pictures (shown here on the right) on the forum. Only the fourth disk was usable though, since the remaining three disks were since overwritten.

Shown below is a copy of the fourth disk, with updated files from between October 23rd and October 28th, 1985, which were likely provided to testers for further evaluation prior to the product's release.

==Alias' copy==
A picture of the floppy disk set of this and a screenshot of the Windows logo screen were provided by a user named Alias, who eventually provided the site with a well preserved and fully original copy, currently provided to visitors as a BetaArchive exclusive..
Microsoft Windows Development Release 5 (DR5) is an early pre-release version of Microsoft Windows 1.0, which shipped to testers in around November 1984. The next pre-release is Microsoft Windows Alpha.

There are several sample applications included to demonstrate the capabilities of Windows:

Graph application
Chart application
Font application
Clock
Puzzle game
Reversi game
==Machine requirements==
This pre-release version supports IBM and COMPAQ personal computers with a graphical display adapter (either a Hercules or CGA display adapter), one floppy disk drive, and a hard disk drive.

==Hercules support==
While this version provides support for Hercules display adapters, only the files necessary to provide CGA support are copied by default. In order to copy the Hercules files, you will need to either modify the INSTALL.BAT file to copy the Hercules files by default, or copy the Hercules files later from the floppy disks yourself.

For Windows to copy the Hercules files by default, you will first need to make a backup copy of the first disk, and then make the following changes to INSTALL.BAT:

* Change the following line:
copy a:ibmcolor.cin %1\windows\test\cursor.exe
copy a:ibmcolor.din %1\windows\test\display.exe

* To the following:
copy a:hercules.cin %1\windows\test\cursor.exe
copy a:hercules.din %1\windows\test\display.exe

You can also rename or remove the CGA files and copy the Hercules files from the disk to the directory on your hard disk where Windows is installed.

Windows 1.0 Beta Release is a pre-release build of [[Windows 1.0]]. It was compiled during early May 1985. This build includes an updated RTM-style installer.

==Installation==
This build does not have PS/2 mouse support. You can either run an emulator that has Microsoft Serial Mouse support or replace MOUSE.EXE with the Windows 1.0 Premiere Edition MOUSE.EXE

For high EGA Color, select, Enhanced Graphics Monitor with Enhanced Display

For this to work, you can have:

MS-DOS, or PC-DOS 2.X or 3.X, DOS 5.X/6.X but once you downloaded 1.0 Beta, add SETVER WIN100.EXE 3.30, and DOSBox: run ver set 3 30

Also Windows 1.0 Beta work VirtualBox and VMWare

Windows 1.0 was the first release of the Microsoft Windows environment for [[MS-DOS]]. It was not a commercial success, however its design would influence the Presentation Manager for OS/2.

Windows 1.0 did not have overlapping windows, and it did not support PS/2 mice. It only ran in real mode. Needless to say this was *NOT* a popular version. It really only is of historical interest.

Even in a primitive state like this, it did have all of the components such as, USER, GDI, KERNEL etc..

There is an excellent article on the development of Windows 1.0 [http://technologizer.com/2010/03/08/the-secret-origin-of-windows/ here].
Windows 1.0 Beta Release is a pre-release build of Windows 1.0. It was compiled during early May 1985. This build includes an updated RTM-style installer.

==Installation==

Windows 3.0 build 55 is a pre-release version of the Windows 3.0 that was shipped to testers in January 1990, as a demonstration of the upcoming version of Windows.

At this point, the product was nearly finished in terms of features and overall usability, and aside from major memory improvements over Windows 2.x, would also include a completely redesigned graphical user interface, namely the Program and File Manager to replace the MS-DOS Executive seen in previous versions of Windows.

A personal computer magazine, InfoWorld, has a full article demonstrating a version of Microsoft Windows 3.0 from this time period in an issue from January 1990.

This version should be installed on a machine running Microsoft MS-DOS 4.0, IBM DOS 4.0, or Compaq DOS 3.31 in order to take advantage of the new features available in this version of Windows.

This early release of Windows 3.0 was released to independent software vendors (ISVs) for testing, and was distributed on 1.2MB 5.25" floppy disks. The label on the disks refer to the build as "Microsoft Windows Pre-Release Version 0.1.".

This pre-release can be only started on a 386+ machine with a specific version of DOS, as not using the correct version will cause Windows to either crash, or refuse to launch the shell. It is speculated that this release was heavily rushed, on the basis of an improvised batch file installation script similar to that of Windows 1.0 DR5, as well as lack of accessories and applications included in later builds of Windows 3.0. Interestingly, this release features a build tag in the bottom right corner of the screen. It will only run a small handful of Windows 2.x or 1.x applications, but you may notice that you can run more of them at once than on Windows 2. This build's control menus contain a reference to the Task Manager as well as the CTRL+ESC keystroke. However, it does not appear to be implemented in this build.

== Setup ==
Windows 3.0 Debug Release 1.14 requires at minimum a 386 processor, with MS-DOS 3.x and MS-DOS 4.x (COMPAQ's 3.31 release is recommended) installed. The script will alert you that you need to manually add the instruction to load HIMEM.SYS to your CONFIG.SYS file. Unlike the final release, this build is started by running the executable WIN386.COM. Should the MS-DOS Executive hang, raise the maximum amount of file handles in CONFIG.SYS (a minimum of 40 is recommended).
