Work on the underlying project started in 1959, and the first AED [[compiler]] was begun in 1963.<br />

It was an extension of the ALGOL 60 version of ALGOL, with the addition of [[structure]]s (which the project called "plexes"), [[pointer]]s, and [[dynamic allocation]]. It was originally created to run on the [[IBM 7090]], under [[Compatible Time-Sharing System|CTSS]]; it later ran on the [[IBM System/360]].<br />
