The '''American Federation of Information Processing Societies''' (usually referred to by the acronym, '''AFIPS''') was the premiere computer science professional society in the USA. The three founding societies of AFIPS were the [[Association for Computing Machinery]], the [[American Institute of Electrical Engineers]], and the [[Institute of Radio Engineers]]. It was set up on May 10, 1961, and shut down in 1990.

It was perhaps best known for its two big annual conferences, the '''Spring''' and '''Fall Joint Computer Conferences''' (known by their acronyms, '''SJCC''' and '''FJCC''').
