Brief, but a start

New page

The '''Association for Computing Machinery''' (usually given as the acronym '''ACM''') is the premiere international computer science professional society. It was founded in 1947 as a US-local organization.

It has numerous Special Interest Groups (SIGs), focused on particular technical areas (such as SIGOPS, for [[operating system]]s); many sponsor regular conferences. In addition to ACM's own magazines, such as the 'Communications of the ACM' (CACM), many of the SIGs also publish magazines.

The ACM Digital Library contains the full text of all articles published by the ACM in its journals, magazines, conference proceedings, etc. In 2022, all content prior to 2000 was made open access.

It has a number of awards, most notably the [[Turing Award]], generally regarded as the 'Nobel Prize in computer science'.
