The '''Control Program operating system''' (usually '''CP''' for short) was the first [[virtual machine]] [[operating system]]; it was the ancestor of the later [[VM operating system]]. It was created at [[International Business Machines|IBM]]'s Cambridge Scientific Center, starting at the end of 1964.

The first version was '''CP-40''', so called because it ran on a modified [[IBM 360/40]]. it was soon replaced by '''CP-67''', which it ran on the [[IBM 360/67]], created with it.
