(A pity, as it had variable-length [[address]]es, the availability of which would have avoided &amp;#039;&amp;#039;many&amp;#039;&amp;#039; headaches caused by the provision of only fixed-length addresses in [[IPv4]].) IPv3 was also the first version in which the functionality of the [[Internet Protocol]] was formally separated from those of the &amp;#039;application&amp;#039; (to the internet layer) layers such as [[Transmission Control Protocol|TCP]] and [[User Datagram Protocol|UDP]].&lt;br /&gt;
