The second microprocessor, developed by intel.  This chip replaced the 4004, and was later replaced by the 8008.

The 4040 microprocessor was developed by Intel as a successor to the Intel [i4004|4004] and was object-code compatible, but with more instructions and features. Even though the 4004 was from 1971 and the 4040 from 1974, the 4040 still executed at 740kHz, same as the 4004.
