Project MAC (the acronym 'MAC' had various expansions, originally Mathematics and Computation'; later 'Multiple Access Computer', 'Machine Aided Cognition', and 'Man and Computer' were added) was formed at MIT in 1963 as a home for most computer research.

In 1970, the MIT Artifical Intelligence Laboratory split off, and in 1975 most of the remnants organized themselves into the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science.
