The VAX 8600 series were the successors to the initial VAX-11/780 of the VAX family. The goal was to have about four times the performance of the /780, at about the same cost. The CPU was built out of ECL gate arrays; like the /780, the system was built around a Synchronous Backplane Interconnect.
