GNU

The GNU project (the name is a recursive acronym of GNU's Not Unix) was started by Richard Stallman in 1984, and its emphasis was free (as in 'free speech', not 'free beer') software.

The hallmark of GNU is the General Public License (GPL), now in its 3rd version.
