     The purpose of this document is to:  (1) define  the  11/730  revision
     control  process,  (2)  document  the  revision  history,  and  (3) to
     identify the compatible hardware, software, diagnostics  and  firmware
     revisions  of  the  VAX 11/730 to assist the field service engineer in
     maintaining these systems.

     There are two variations of the 11/730 system - 11/730 RL02/R80
     based systems (Package Systems 1 and 2), and the 730XA UDA50 based
     systems.

     1.0  INTRODUCTION


     This revision control document will  be  distributed  through  various
     channels  of  field  service communications, i.e.  Speed Bulletin, VAX
     Fiche Library and made available upon request, through CSSE.  It can
     also be copied via the EnetIt  on VOLKS::CLUSTER$REV:730REV.DOC. It
     will be updated when major changes in revision levels occur. This should
     serve  as  a  reference  tool  in  determining  the  correct/revisions
     required  to maintain the high level of service provided by F/S.  This
     document will be replaced by Revision Matrix (RM)  documents  at  some
     time in the future.  (See Section 2)

     Phase I revision control on the 11/730 will be implemented in a manner
     similar  to  the current VAX products (11/780 and 11/750) today, which
     is a plan to upgrade all F/S supported machines to the latest revision
     -  as  defined in the REVCMP document.  Although, due to the projected
     high  volume  of  11/730  shipments,  along  with  the  high  cost  of
     up-grading  field  machines,  this process will be assessed at a later
     date, and may be modified to allow for F/S support of multiple  levels
     of machines.



     2.0  REVISION MATRIX

     Revision Matrix (DEC Standard 068) will be implemented for all  11/730
     variations.   Revision  Matrix  documents  track  revision history and
     compatibility of units and combination of units.  RM documents will be
     under  ECO control, so that every time there is an ECO to a part, that
     changes the revision of that part, the documents will be updated.   RM
     documents  for  the  11/730 systems will track revision information as
     outlined in the following matrix.

     * RL02/R80 configuration does not contain a UDA50 or DEUNA.
     * All 730XA systems contain UDA50s and may contain DEUNAs.

     This matrix should be used for compatibility purposes only;  all items
     listed do not necessarily affect the revision of the 11/730 system.

     Distribution of the Revision Matrix documents to the field is still in
     question  at  this  time;   at  a  minimum,  they will be available on
     microfiche.  Until they are  available,  Revcon  information  will  be
     distributed via this document.



     2.1  SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION

     Supporting documentation for the 11/730 variations should be available
     in the VAX LIBRARY through your local fiche librarian.

     3.0  REVISION CRITERIA

     Any changes to the hardware, that affects performance or operation  of
     the  system that is detectable by the diagnostics and operating system
     software can  change  an  option  (unit)  revision  level  -  i.e.   a
     functional   change.    Modifications  to  cables,  power  subsystems,
     ventilation equipment, or mechanical design should not cause a  change
     to the unit revision level.

     Only a functional change to the kernel (11730-Z/11730-A)  affects  the
     revision  of  the  11/730 system.  The remaining options listed on the
     revision chart in section 1.1 are tracked for compatibility purposes.

     Today, modules can be marked  in  one  of  three  ways:   CS  (Circuit
     Schematic)  Revision,  Module Revision or Part Revision.  DEC Standard
     012 institutes Part Revision and is being implemented, as ECOs  occur,
     on  all  existing  VAX  products.   All new VAX products will use Part
     Revision.  Part Revision always consists of a  letter  and  a  number,
     i.e.  A1 or A2.  The letter is increased for a functional change;  the
     number is incremented for a non-functional change.

     The revision is noted on each module by either a brady marker or a red
     stamp on the end of the module handle.  If both are present, the brady
     marker should represent the latest revision.  (It  is  wise  to  do  a
     quick check, if possible, to insure that this is correct!)

     Compatible revisions for each part (unit)  are  separated  by  commas;
     also,  revisions  separated  by  a  dash, i.e.  A1-C2, mean that those
     revisions, plus whatever is in between, are compatible.   Any  special
     requirements  (specific  revisions  for  certain configurations, etc.)
     will be noted in the revision summary section.   Revisions  noted  are
     all minimum revisions.

     A revision label will be installed on the 11/730  cabinet  which  will
     contain the revision of the major options (units) residing in the CPU.
     This label will be  marked  in  manufacturing  before  the  11/730  is
     shipped  and  should  only  be updated by the field service technician
     when instructed to do so - usually as part of an FCO.



     3.1  VAX 11/730 SYSTEM IDENTIFICATION REGISTER (SID)

     The 11/730 system identification  register  is  a  read-only  constant
     register that specifies the processor type and the microcode revision,
     and is a soft register residing in  the  microcode.   The  entire  SID
     register  is included in the error log.  The type field may be used by
     software to distinguish processor specific field.

     4.0  11/730 SYSTEM REVISION HISTORY

     The  following  chart  summaries  the  compatible  option   revisions,
     software,  microcode  and  diagnostic  revision levels for each system
     revision.  See section 4.X for further  information  about  individual
     options.

    *The 730XA shipped with the microcode at revision 56.  Diagnostic
    releases 15-17 support both microcode revs 56 and 57.  However, VMS
    Version 4.0 which was released in January, 1985 requires the diagnostics
    in release 18.  Rev 58 of the microcode was also available with release
    18.

NOTE:  All media and diagnostics were archived before release of VMS V5.0.

     5.2  11730-Z KERNEL - 01 REVISION SUMMARY

     The 11730-Z kernel revision 01 represents FCO VAX11730-R-0001,  and
     is based on ECO's M8394-TW006 (Rev H) and M8394-TW007 (Rev J).

     This new revision allows the use of  remote  diagnosis  with  protocol
     (along with Rev 54 microcode) and 1200 baud.

     Mfg.  began shipping this on 2/15/83 - CPU serial No.  SV01108.  Field
     implementations  will  begin in May 1983, and will be coordinated with
     RB730 Rev 1.

        * QUICK CHECK

          Diagnostic Release 10 (minimum) is required to implement CRD Menu
           Mode.

        * MICROCODE

          11/730 microcode version 54 (BE-T173D-DE) is required for RD
          protocol.  Version 54 was included in Diagnostic Release 9.

        5.4.1  11730-A Kernel - 01 REVISION SUMMARY -

         *  QUICK CHECK

            Unit revision label on box (11730-A) should read 01

            For detailed information, see section 5.2.

         *  VAX/VMS

            VMS version required is 3.5.

         *  DIAGNOSTICS

            Diagnostics required were released in Diagnostic Release 14,
            (November 1984).

            DUCT is available in Release 14.  DUCT is a program that configures
            diagnostics.  The program is on magtape, RL02, RA60, RC25 and RK07.

         *  MICROCODE

            Version 56 shipping at FCS (BE-T173F-ME).

            Version 57 (BE-T173G-ME, released March 1984 fixes potential prob-
                blem with VMS herald hang; it also allows reporting of single
                bit memory errors to the System Error Logger.
                It is suggested that the microcode on 730XA systems be
                upgraded to Rev 57.

                        To recover from a herald hang problem:

                        then continue.

            Version 58 (BE-T173J-ME), released January 1985) fixes two
                microcode bugs--see Section 7.2 of this document.

5.5     KA730 - 1A REVISION SUMMARY
        ---------------------------

        The KA730 revision 1A represents FCO 11730XA-S0001 and is based on
        creation of a -YA variant to the M8391 module.

          M8391-YA -A1 -  Introduction of the "YA" variation of the
                          M8391 module to support the Battery Backup Option
                          for the 11730 System Building Block
                          configuration only.
                   -B1 -  Fixes corrupted bank of main memory which
                          results when doing unaligned longword
                          transfers.

        KA730 - 02 REVISION SUMMARY
        ---------------------------

        This revision of the KA730 includes Nmoss rams on the M8390 and
        M8391 modules.

        KA730 - 2A REVISION SUMMARY
        ---------------------------

        This revision of the KA730 includes Nmoss rams as indicated
        above in addition to the M8391-YA module.

        NOTE: All of the above revisions of the KA730 - 01, 1A, 2 and 2A may
        be found and are acceptable in Revision 01 of the kernal in any
        of the  730 systems.

     6.0  11/730 OPTION REVISION HISTORY

     Each option revision section will indicate known  hardware,  operating
     system,  diagnostics  and  microcode constraints.  New options will be
     considered compatible  with  the  current  kernel  hardware,  VMS  and
     microcode  revisions,  assuming  that  is  what  was  used  during the
     development of the option.  Earlier compatible revisions will be noted
     only if they have been tested and proven to work.

     Any compatibility problems of each option with the 11730 and/or  730XA
     will be noted.

     Current part revisions and known compatibility problems ONLY  will  be
     noted  for DEUNA and UDA50-A.  VAX CSSE does not have revision control
     responsibility for these options.

     ECO M8388-TW004 (Rev E).

     This new revision fixes a problem with the R80 formatter.

     Mfg.  began shipping this on 2/1/83 - CPU serial No.  SV01104.   Field
     implementation  began  in  May  1983, with a module swap incorporating
     both RB730 - 01 and RB730 - 02, along with the 11/730 FCO (System  Rev
     01).

        * QUICK CHECK

          Unit revision label on box (11/730-Z) should read 01
              M8388-E - E33 is 23-084J5-00
                        (Fixes R80 formatter problem)


        * VAX/VMS

          VAX/VMS version 3.1.  This is required to fix a problem with the
          VMS utility "BAD" in version 3.0.

          The latest microcode version is 54.



     6.2.3  RB730 - 02 REVISION SUMMARY -

        RB730 not used in 730XA.

        The RB730 revision 02 represents FCO # RB730-R-0002, and is based
        on ECO M8388-TW005 (F).

        This new revision fixes a power up fault problem exhibited on drive
        0, with some modules.

        Manufacturing began shipping this on 4/15/83 - CPU serial # SV01522.
        Field implementation began in May 1983, and was coordinated with
        11/730 Rev 1.

        * QUICK CHECK

          Unit revision label on box (11/730-Z) should read 02.
                M8388-F - 74S74 in location E12
                          (Fixes power up fault problem caused by
                           CPU clock stall during power up and microcode
                           load)

        * MICROCODE

          The latest microcode version is 54.


     6.3  DMF32 OPTION REVISION

     6.3.2  DMF32 - 01 REVISION SUMMARY -

        The DMF32 revision 01 represents FCO # M8396-R-0005, and is based
        on ECO M8396-TW005.

        This new revision fixes microcode problems.

        Mfg. will begin shipping this sometime in Jan. 1983.  Field
        implementations will begin in May 1983, and will be coordinated
        with the 11/730 and RB730 FCO's.

          Unit revision label (DMF32) should read 01.



              M8396-E - check that E102 is a 23-039K4-00
                        (Fixes microcode problems)

                   -F - check that R18, R20 are P/N 13-21476-01,
                        and a wire add on side 2 from J3 pin "A" to bottom
                        of C9
                        (Fixes problem with 9636 drivers oscillating.)

        * VAX/VMS

          VAX/VMS version 3.1 - this is backwards compatible to 3.0.

        * MICROCODE

          DMF32 revision 01 microcode revision - 4K23.

     6.4  DMF32 - 02 REVISION SUMMARY


        Represents DMF32-S-0002 FCO, and consists of ECO 5414459-MK002 and
        M8396-TW007.  FCO availability is March 1984.

        This revision fixes noise problems with the 11/730 and 11/750 systems.
        (Note that 11/730 grounding FCOs should be installed in conjunction
        with the DMF FCO:  FCO 11730Z-S-0002 and FCO BA11Z-S-0001.  Projected
        availability is March 1984.)

        Note that ECO 5414459-MK002 was implemented in manufacturing in October
        1983; M8396-TW007 will be implemented by March 1984, so many DMFs will
        have one ECO and not the other.  Both are needed to have a Rev 2 DMF.

        * Quick Check

          Unit revision label (DMF32) should read 02.

          M8396-H1   - E33,E34,E43,E44 are 9639
                            (Fixes noise problems on 11750 and 11730.)
          5414459-C1 - Wire from J2-J to J2-M
                            (Grounds distribution panel.)

        * VAX/VMS

          VAX multiport driver patch needed along with hardware FCO.  Patch
          will be officially released in VMS 3.6; until then, local software
          specialists should be contacted for copies of the patch prior to
          installation of this FCO.

        * Microcode

          Current version is 4K23.

     6.5  DMF32 - 03 REVISION SUMMARY

        Represents FCO DMF32-S-0003 and consists of ECO M8396-TW008.  This
        ECO consists of microcode corrections necessary to implement X.25
        (SDLC/HDLC protocols).  Also fixes LN01 problems - printer line
        length not currently supported.  Printer line length should not be
        able to be set to zero (will hang DMF32 and system).

        FCO implementation should only be to fix problem - i.e. X.25 systems
        and LN01s.  Availability of the FCO is February 1984.  Expected
        manufacturing implementation is March 1984.

           Unit revision label (DMF32) should read 03.
           M8396-J1 - E141 is 23-028F5-00
                           (Microcode change for X.25)

           M8396-K1 - E138 is 23-043F5-00
                           (Microcode rom change to fix parallel port

     6.6  KC730 OPTION REVISION


        The remote diagnosis option for the 11/730 is the KC730.
        The KC730 hardware, that will be kept under revision control, are two
        proms, that will reside (when used) on the WCS board (M8394), in chip
        locations E50 and E52.  The location number for each chip is
        printed on the chip.  The M8394 module must be at least a rev H
        to support the KC730.

     6.7.3 UDA50 REVISION SUMMARY

           Quick Check for M7485 Rev H1:  Chip E1 is 23-157F4-00.

                FCO UDA50-R-005 involves upgrading the M7485-YA
                module to Rev H1.  Two EQ kits are available for this
                purpose:

        EQ-01239-01 - upgrades Rev E or F modules to Rev H1 (3 ROMS).

        EQ-01239-02 - upgrades Rev D modules to Rev H1 (12 ROMS).

        The 11/730 CPU microcode is loaded into the control store from the
        TU58 tape drive during system bootstrap (power-up).  The microcode
        revision will be printed on the console terminal when system is
        powered-up.




        To read the microcode revision (within the SID register) you

     7.1  Microcode Revision 57

     Rev 57 fixes the following microcode problems:

           1.  Enables reporting of single bit memory errors to system error logger.
           2.  Fixes VMS herald hang on UDA based systems (See section
               5.3.1 for further details.)

     Rev 57 was automatically distributed in March to anyone on the VAX
     Diagnostic Distribution list.  The console tape could also be ordered
     directly from SDC.

    7.2  Microcode Revision 58

    Rev 58 fixes the following microcode problems:

           1.  Bug in ADDPx, SUBPx (x=4,6) instructions not setting the
                V bit correctly.
           2.  Bug with ASHP instruction not always putting correct data
                in upper nibble of the first byte.  This also caused incorrect
                setting of the Z, V and N bits.

    Rev 58 was automatically distributed in January, 1985 in diagnostic release
    18 to anyone on the VAX Diagnostic Distribution list.
