'''RTS-8''' (later spelled '''RTS/8''') is a compact [[real-time system|real-time]] [[operating system]] designed for the [[PDP-8 family]] of [[processor]]s (except the [[PDP-8/S]]). This system allows up to 63 [[task]]s to run concurrently and compete for resources on a fixed priority basis. It is permanently resident in [[main memory]]; it does not include a [[file system]].

It can be used for a wide range of [[application]]s in which a number of processes must be monitored and controlled. As with other real-time systems, RTS-8 responds to physical or conceptual events to permit the timely execution and scheduling of tasks. It can support [[OS/8]] for [[program]] development, using a second console [[terminal]].
