A '''sixel''' is six [[pixel]]s in vertical orientation, transferred as a unit.  It was first used to send graphics to [[Digital Equipment Corporation|DEC]] [[printer]]s. The next application was to transfer soft [[font]]s to the [[VT220]], and later [[terminal]]s expanded on this.

Around 2010 [number pulled from thin air], the sixel format was rediscovered and used with modern [[terminal emulator]]s for things like video playback.
