The MIT Artifical Intelligence Laboratory started as a section, focused on research in artificial intelligence, of Project MAC, from which it split into an independent laboratory in 1970.

It eventually re-united with the remants of Project MAC (which had mostly formed themselves into the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science) in 2003, forming the MIT Computer Science and Artifical Intelligence Laboratory.
