GeoCities was an early, influential site on the World Wide Web. It was filled with user-created content; in 1999 it was the third most visited place on the Internet. It was purchased by Yahoo in 1999; it was shut down a decade later, in 2009, after many users left it for newer social networking sites. This prompted a massive, ad hoc, volunteer effort to salvage the contents, which was fairly successful.
