America Online (later formally named just AOL) was at one point the largest Internet service provider in the USA, providing email and World Wide Web access. It also provided (and popularized) such applications as instant messaging and chat rooms. After being involved in a number of corporate reorganizations, the replacement of dial-up as a means of access to the Internet led to its decline.
