A signal refers to the transmission of information, usually by electrical means along a conductor. All such signals are, of course, at base analog, but at a higher level, they may be digital (i.e. in theory, can only take a limited number of values).
The term 'signal' is also sometime used for raising an exception in a condition handler system.
