The International Network Working Group (usually referred to by its acronym, INWG) was the first organized group to study the field of internetworking - the connection together of disparate data networks. It was formed in 1972, at the first International Conference on Computer Communications; about a year later, it was given a formal home in the International Federation for Information Processing, as IFIP Working Group 6.1 - Computer Communication.

Although the INWG eventually tailed out, a deep descendant, the Internet Engineering Task Force, is today in charge of the technology of the Internet, the internet which the INWG laid the groundwork for.
