Drive refers to the mechanism of most secondary storage systems; for units with removable media, it is the part which remains connected to the computer (via a device controller).
There are several kinds, depending on the storage medium:
- disk drives, or hard drives;
- tape drives for magnetic tape
- floppy drives for floppy diskettes
