A half-duplex communication system or channel is one which, although it is bidirectional (i.e. either end can send information to the other), is one in which only one direction can be operating at any given time. This is less capable, but may be simpler to implement, or use less resources (e.g. not requiring two full, separate channels, one for each direction).
