The Control Program operating system (usually CP for short) was the first virtual machine operating system; it was the ancestor of the later VM operating system. It was created at IBM's Cambridge Scientific Center, starting at the end of 1964.

The first version was CP-40, so called because it ran on a modified IBM 360/40. it was soon replaced by CP-67, which it ran on the IBM 360/67, created with it.
