A laser (the term originated as an acronym of 'light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation') is an optical device that can convert supplied energy into a beam of almost perfectly 'coherent' light (light whose photons are of exactly identical wavelength, perfectly in phase, and travelling precisely in parallel, directionally). Such light has many uses.
