A news was the first Netnews program, the direct forerunner of those which the modern NNTP protocol. From what I can find, it was released on 06/24/1980 in a UseNIX conference at Duke University.

A news relied on Unix System 7's messaging functions and UUCP to create a global news network.

A news was later supplanted by B News.
