An embedded system is a computer which is part of a larger electrical or mechanical system, often in a real-time mode. Their software is fixed, and performs entirely pre-defined functions; in smaller systems (the majority), is often stored in ROM.

The first embedded systems were minicomputers, but now microcomputers are used; in fact, the vast majority of modern production of these is used in embedded applications.
