The MIT Artifical Intelligence Laboratory was an early, and influential, artificial intelligence research group. Its roots lie in an informal group of AI researchers who got together in 1959; when Project MAC started in 1963, they were included as a section, focused on research in AI. It formally became an independent laboratory by splitting from Project MAC in 1970.
It eventually re-united with the remants of Project MAC (which had mostly formed themselves into the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science) in 2003, forming the MIT Computer Science and Artifical Intelligence Laboratory.
