1.0 INTRODUCTION
This document is intended to define the revision history of the VAX
11/750 system for purposes of identifying the compatible hardware,
diagnostics, firmware, and operating system software. (All references
to the 11/750 apply to the 11/751 as well, unless otherwise noted.)
NOTE: All references to Rev. 00-04 have been deleted. It is assumed
all field machines are at minimum Rev 5.
This document will be updated on a quarterly basis and released to
microfiche in the VAX Library Update and the Speed Bulletin.
The following VAX LIBRARY CARDS will be required as reference to the
revision control plan. This document will state the source of
information necessary for understanding firmware, diagnostic, and
system software compatibility.

1.1 11/750 COMPATIBILITY CHART
--------------------------
The following chart summarizes the compatible hardware, software,
microcode and diagnostic revision levels for each system revision.
For information concerning the corresponding module revisions for
the kernel and option modules, see sections 5.1 and 6.
The system revision reflects the rev of the overall 11/750 system.
Only an increase to the kernel rev will increment the system revision;
thus, the kernel revision and system revision will always be the
same.
The implementation of the SID switch reverses the bit positions of
the SID register to be able to read the 11/750 hardware revision as
well as the backplane revision. (See Section 3.0 and 3.1).
(Refer to Option Revision sections for module revision information.)

Notes:
------
o VMS V 4.0 will require minimum hardware Rev 50/58 (i.e. L0008) and
minimum ucode Rev 98 FOR CI750 SYSTEMS with no UDA50s.
o 11/750 systems with UDA50s and CIs must be at Rev 7 prior to VMS V4.0
upgrades and UDA50 must be at Rev 5.
o UDA50A Rev 5 refers to ucode Version 5.
o Minimum rev for CI750 is B1. It is recommended that all CI750s be
upgraded to the current rev.
* "C" = new convention for tracking options. See below for further
explanation.
Old Rev "00" =A
"01" =B
11750 CPU with a CI750 must have 4MB of physical memory.
o CMT103 is required for VMS V5.0.
1.2 11/750 REVISION SUMMARY CHART

2.0 REVISION CRITERIA
Architectural or functional changes in the system must cause a change
of the kernel revision level. This includes changes to the hardware
that change performance or operation of the system that is detectable
to the diagnostics and operating system software. Modifications to
cables, power subsystems, ventilation equipment, or mechanical design
should not cause a change to the kernal revision level. The VAX 11/750
revision history for a particular subsystem or option will be desig-
nated as follows...
OPTION-XXN
where, OPTION is the five letter neumonic (i.e. KA750), XX is a fun-
tional change description code (i.e 01), and N is a non-functional
change to the option. Non-functional changes to an option include
relayout of modules to eliminate rework wires or changes to document-
ation that do not affect operation of the system. Changes to purchase
part numbers at the module level should not cause the hardware revision
to be raised either. Functional changes to any of the modules in the
kernel subsystem (i.e. KA750 CPU and MS750) increments each module
revision, as well as the kernel revision.
A switch pack and pull up resistor assembly has been designed and was
installed in all Rev "C" backplanes shipped from manufacturing: in
11/750 CPUs, beginning with Serial No. BTO3096, and 11/751 CPUs,
beginning with Serial No. BTO215. The switch pack will be set by
manufacturing before it is shipped. Switch pack settings will change
as a result of a kernel revision change to the 11/750 CPU. This will
be done by an ECO.
3.0 VAX 11/750 KERNEL REVISION CONTROL
The VAX 11/750 processor has a system identification register (SID)
register similiar to the VAX 11/780 processor; however, there are
two basic differences between the VAX 11/750 and VAX 11/780 processor
SID registers. These are...
* VAX 11/750 SID does NOT contain the system serial number
* VAX 11/750 SID DOES contain a field describing current
control store microcode revision. This is
because VAX 11/750 does not have the FPLA to
intercept ECO'd microcode locations.
The figure 2-1 illustrates the format of the VAX 11/750 system
identification register (SID). This register is accessible to macro
code and the console terminal through IPR address ^X3E. Examination of
the register shows 4 bytes, 3 of which are functional. The high byte
is the processor type code byte used by the diagnostics and operating
system to decide which type of processor the software is operating on.
Known type codes are listed below.
TYPE CODE BYTE PROCESSOR
00000000 undefined
00000001 VAX 11/780
00000010 VAX 11/750
00000011 VAX 11/730
Byte 2 of the SID register is always zero.
Byte 1 of the SID register is the microcode revision of the control
store. This number is generated by the microprogrammer in the
REV750.MIC file of the microcode listing ECOAB. There is a MICRO2
assembler directive called .SET/MICROREV=version at the top of the
page which is upgraded for each major assembly of the the microcode.
In the MFPR microinstruction flows this equated value is substituted
into the short literal field of the microinstruction and becomes the
microcode revision that appears in byte 1 of the SID register. The
number following MICROREV is DECIMAL. You must convert the hex byte to
decimal after examining the SID register.
Byte 0 of the SID register is the hardware revision of the kernal and
the backplane rev. Both of these revisions are programmable on the CPU
backplane via the Kernal Revision Level Input Device.
(See section 3.1 for more detailed information.)
There is a 74LS244 tri-state driver on the UBI module that interfaces
to the CPU WBUS. The MFPR microinstruction flows read this byte when
referencing the SID register. The number in byte 0 of the SID
register is a BINARY revision level programmed on the SID input device.

3.1 Kernel Identification Register Hardware Revision Level Input Device
The Kernel ID Register switch pack and pull-up assembly attaches
across slots 3 and 4 section B of the backplane. Backplane pins
will protrude through the PC board and pins used will have a female
socket that is easily grasped with a scope probe.
The following diagrams show what the switch pack actually looks
like; the section containing the bits that must be set is
depicted in a larger scale at the right.

All Rev "B" backplanes in the field will have the switch installed
via FCO. This device is included in the VAX 11/750 Rev 7 FCO kits -
EQ-01201-01 and EQ-01201-02. Instructions on how to install and set
the switch are included in the Rev 7 FCO document.
The parts can also be obtained by ordering the following parts:
54-15142 SID Switch
12-16821-00 Backplane Housing Connector
3.2 SID Register Hardware Revision Problem
The current design of the SID register hardware revision byte 0, has
an 8 bit 74LS244 tri-state driver chip interfaced to the backplane. The
chip inputs are not inverted in the driver and are not pulled up either.
so the resultant data with SID register byte 0 not programmed is FF.
Since the inputs just "floats" at times the output may not always be FF.
This is a problem when running the DIAGNOSTIC SUPERVISOR. The super-
visor "forgets" where it came from and the program data must be enter-
ed manually to get the supervisor to "remember" where it came from.
This is time consuming, especially if the field engineer must power the
machine up and down to replace modules. The result is the MTTR is ex-
tended to repair the machine. The register must be wired HI or LO, but
wiring the bits HI is another problem. The CPU power supply must be
connected to the chip inputs directly. If the 74LS244 fails by shorting
the input pin to ground, hopefully the chip will burn open, but if not,
other damage could result. There should be a pulled up +5V through a
1K resistor to several unused backplane pins.
3.3 Microcode Revision History
A comprehensive revision history of VAX 11/750 microcode is contained
in the microcode listing in the VAX LIBRARY fiche set (ECOAB 3.0).
Revision W of the VAX LIBRARY contains the microcode listing for
control store version CMT050. Since there have been numerous changes
to the microcode since version CMT050, it is suggested that you read
the microcode revision history contained in the REV750.MIC file of
the microcode listing. Changes to the VAX 11/750 microcode AFTER
CMT062 will be described briefly in this document and what the
symptoms and corrective actions were. CMT098 will be available in
release 19 as ECOAB98.0 on microfiche.
4.0 MODULE REVISION HISTORY
Modules are marked in one of three ways: CS (Circuit Schematic)
Revision, MR (Module Revision) or PR (Part Revision). DEC Standard 012
institutes Part Revision and is being implemented on all 11/750
modules. All new modules will use Part Revision. Part Revision always
consists of a letter and a number, i.e. A1 or A2. The letter is
increased for a functional change; the number is incremented for a
non-functional change.
Part Revision will be implemented on existing 11/750 modules, as ECOs
occur, by using the current CS revision. CS Rev "D" becomes Part Rev
"D1" for a non-functional change; for a functional change, the Part
Rev would be "E1".
The revision is noted on each module by either a brady marker or a red
stamp on the tab of the module handle. If both are present, the brady
marker should represent the latest revision. (It is wise to do a quick
check, if possible, to insure that this is correct!)
Compatible revisions for each part (unit) are separated by commas;
also, revisions separated by a dash, i.e. A1-C2, means that those
revisions, plus whatever is in between, are compatible. Any special
requirements (specific revisions for certain configurations, etc.)
will be noted in the revision summary section. Revisions noted are
all minimum revisions.
5.0 11/750 KERNEL REVISION HISTORY
------------------------------
Listed below is the revision history of the 11/750 kernel, indicating
the compatible module and/or subsystem revisions for each hardware
revision. Equivalent module revisions are separated by commas.
The 11/750 kernel consists of the KA750 CPU and the MS750 (AA and CA).

--------------------------------------------------------------------
* The kernel will also contain EITHER an L0003 or a
L0003-YA module--not both! The L0003-YA was introduced as a Cost
Reduced module with TB and Cache Address Termination.
** Note that the kernel contains EITHER an L0005 OR an L0008 -
not both!!!! All L0005s in the field were replaced with
L0008s as part of FCO VAX11/750-R-0005.
This history has been separated into three charts:
Chart 1 - Rev "B" backplane - SID Switch Setting = xxxxxxx0
Chart 2 - Rev "C" backplane - SID Switch Setting = xxxxxxx8
Chart 3 - Rev "D" backplane - SID Switch Setting = xxxxxxxC
**NOTE: All revisions below Revision 5X have been removed from this document.
This is because all systems should be at a minimum of revision 5.
Older system revisions are no longer supported.
KA750-A REVISION SUMMARY
------------------------
o This is the first introduction of rev control for the KA750. Up
to this point, revisions were tracked at the Kernel level only.
o This revision implements ECO L0004-MKO10 and fixes two problems
with the UBI:
1 - UBI looses device interrupts.
2 - When the UBI is the Bus Master, it deasserts BBSY at the
same time as MSYN L, allowing no deskew time for the address
and control lines.
o FCO KA750-A-I-001 was made available to those customers who
experienced either of the above two problems. Not all systems require
the fix.

5.2 11/750-50 KERNEL REVISION SUMMARY
---------------------------------
NOTE THAT REV 50/58 WAS CANCELLED IN Q4FY84, EXCEPT FOR REPLACEMENT
OF THE L0005 CCS MODULE WITH THE L0008-YA OR -YB PCS MODULE.
EQ KIT NUMBERS FOR THE L0008 MODULES REMAIN THE SAME. SYSTEMS THAT
DO NOT CONTAIN AN L0008 SHOULD BE UPGRADED CONCURRENT WITH REV 70/78.
(SEE SECTION 5.8)
Following Rev 50/58 revision summaries are for historical info.
o Creation date is August 1983 - mfg. implementation of Rev 50.
o Note that the difference between 50 and 58 is the backplane rev
and the memory - 50 contains the Rev "B" backplane and 16K memory
(L0011 controller and M8728 arrays); 58 machines contain the Rev
"C" backplane and 64K memory (L0016 controller and M8750 (or M8728
arrays).
This will result in some differences, but most information for
for Rev 5 applies to both 50 and 58 machines. The differences
will be noted.
o This FCO consists of the following ECOs:
L0003-TW003 - See Section 5.8
L0003-TW004 - See Section 5.8
L0004-TW006 - On unaligned data transfers using the
buffered data path, and Unibus address bits
0 and 1 are asserted the UBI microsequencer
will branch to DATOB execution flows on a
DATI.
- Writes to the Unibus map that clear the valid
bit when the UBI is asserting SSYN can cause
SSYN to deassert before MSYN deasserts.
- the contents of the Time of Year Offset Register
are modified upon assertion of UBUS DCLO L.
- The UBI can assert DBBZ in response to a CPU
Unibus reference after entering purge microcode
flows causing the system to hang.
L0016-SH002 - The refresh logic does not always work correctly
on power up with six or more M8750 arrays.
11750-TW005/
11751-TW004 - Replace L0005 (Common Control Store) with L0008
(Patchable Control Store)
o Manufacturing implementation for a COMPLETE Rev 5 11/750/11/751
system was July 1984.
Field implementation for Rev 5 began in September 1983.
o FCO DW750-R-0001 and FCO KC750-R-0001 should be implemented, if
required, at the same time as Rev 5. (See Sections 6.4 and 6.6
of this document for more details on these FCOs.)
o The L0008 (PCS) module requires PCS microcode that is on TU58
Tape #3, P/N BE-T538A-DE. This tape will be included in the L0008
E.Q. kits and must be used to load the PCS microcode in order to
run the new microcode - Rev 96 or 97. If the L0008 is installed
without this tape, the machine will work but will run Rev 94
microcode.
Instructions on installing PCS are included in the FCO
documentation and will be included with new systems shipped from
manufacturing that contain the L0008 module.
o Compatible revision levels
. Microcode - CMT096 and CMT097 - replaces CMT094
. VAX/VMS - Compatible with 2.X, 3.X
**Note** 11/750 systems running Version 2.X that have a
battery backup option are known to have problems
with warm restart once Rev 5 (i.e. the L0008
module) is installed. Plan is to fix this in a
future release of PCS microcode.
Until then, it is recommended that these systems
not be upgraded with the FCO.
. Diagnostics
Minimum EVNDX for Rev 50/58 is 12 (May 1983). Minimum

5.4 11/750-60 KERNEL REVISION SUMMARY
---------------------------------
o REV 60/68 HAS BEEN CANCELLED. NO FCO WILL BE IMPLEMENTED.
ALL L0003 REV H1/H2 MODULES WILL BE REPLACED WITH REV J1/J2
MODULES AS PART OF Rev 70/78; ALL L0004 REV L1/L2 WILL BE REPLACED
WITH REV M1/M2 AS PART OF REV 70/78.
A problem was discovered with the L0003 cache parity fix
(Rev H1/H2). DO NOT USE L0003 REV H1/H2, AS POSSIBLE
CORRUPTION OF CUSTOMER'S DATA CAN OCCUR. This is known to be
a problem with CI750s and DR750s, but can potentially be a
problem in an 11/750 or 11/751 without these options.
o The major difference between Revision 60 and 68 is the backplane
revisions - 60 = Rev B; 68 = Rev C. Most information applies to
both 60 and 68 and will be outlined in this section. Differences
for Rev 68 will be noted.
o Manufacturing implementation for Rev 6 was March 5, 1984 -
from Burlington and Galway (approximately 50% will be POM and ship
directly to customers; the other 50% will ship to FA&T facilities);
FA&T plants (Westminster, Kanata, Ayr) will begin shipping Rev 6 in
April.
(Note that manufacturing only ships Rev 68)
o Field implementation of this FCO is expected to begin in Q4FY84..
o Depending on the revision status of the machine, there may be
more ECOs to install than those listed below. The FCO document
for Rev 6 contains instructions to upgrade machines from Rev 3,
4 and 5 to Rev 6.
o This REV 6 FCO consists of the following ECOs:
L0003-TW005 - Fixes phantom TB parity errors
- Allows recovery for cache parity errors
- Allows recover for soft TB parity errors
New Part Revision marked on the module handle will
be: Etch C - "H1"; Etch D - "H2"
CMT098 microcode required along with L0003
hardware
L0004-TW007 - Corrects lost device interrupt problem
- Permits use of all vendor parts on QVL
- Controls crystal voltage when toy battery
isn't installed
New Part Revision marked on the module handle will
be: Etch D - "L1"; Etch E - "L2"
o Compatible Revision Levels
. Microcode - CMT098 (PN BE-T538C-ME) - Released from SDC
March 5, 1984.
Rev 98 microcode will be included with 11/750 and
11/751 CPUs shipped from Burlington through March,
to insure that the current microcode is available
at installation. Software boxes shipped from SDC
may contain the old rev microcode; Rev 98 part number
is BE-T538C-ME. ONLY REV 98 SHOULD BE USED!!!
. VAX/VMS - Warm restart problems in systems running 2.X of
VMS still exists - there are no plans to fix this
problem in the near future.

---------------------------------
o Rev 60/68 HAS BEEN CANCELLED. NO FCO WILL BE IMPLEMENTED.
ALL L0003 REV H1/H2 MODULES WERE REPLACED WITH J1/J2
MODULES AS PART OF REV 70/78; ALL L0004 REV L1/L2 MODULES
WERE REPLACED WITH REV M1/M2 MODULES AS PART OF REV 70/78.

5.6 11/750-70 KERNEL REVISION SUMMARIES
-----------------------------------
o Note that the difference between Revs 70, 78 and 7C is the
backplane rev and the memory - 70 contains the Rev "B" backplane
and 16K memory (L0011 controller and M8728 arrays); 78 machines
contain the Rev "C" backplane and 64K memory (L0016 controller
and M8750 (or M8728 arrays); 7C contains the Rev "D" backplane
and 4MB memory (L0022 controller and M7199) or M8750 arrays.
This will result in some differences, but most information for
Rev 7 applies to 70, 78 and 7C machines. The differences
will be noted.
Creation date is May 1984 - manufacturing implementation
date.
o FCO implementation July 1984. EQ numbers for Rev 7 are the
same as Rev 6: L0003 - EQ-01201-05; L0004 - EQ-01201-04; if
required, L0008-YA - EQ-01201-01 or L0008-YB EQ-01201-02.
o Rev 7 incorporated all fixes from Rev 5 and Rev 6 EXCEPT
for the cache parity fix (See above section). This fix
has been disabled on Rev J1/J2 L0003s.
NOTE: L0003 and L0004 revisions should be checked prior to ordering
Rev 7 material. Manufacturing is known to have shipped Rev
7 L0003s and L0004s while still setting the SID switch at 68.

(CI780.BIN Rev 3.0)
o This FCO is part of VAXcluster Rev D1. Other FCOs that could
be needed to bring the Cluster to Rev D1 are:
FCO H/W Rev
CI780-R-00C1 Rev C1
HSC50-R-0006 Rev C1
RA80X-R-0002 Rev B0
RA60-R-0003 Rev A5
These FCOs should be installed prior to or during VMS V4.0
installation. Note that although VMS Release notes state that
earlier revisions are acceptable, i.e. will probably work,
engineering and product management has determined that the
customer needs all these FCOs for acceptable cluster performance
under VMS V4.0.
Details of Cluster Rev D1 requirements were sent to all branch
managers.
Contact your regional/country FCO coordinator for ordering info
on these FCOs.
Refer to the Cluster Revision Control document for more information
on Cluster Rev D1 requirements.
o Minimum requirement for CI functional diagnostics (EVGAA, EVGAB)
is 1.1.
CI750-C1 REVISION SUMMARY

CI750 Revision "D1"**
---------------------
o Creation Date - November 1985.
This revision changed the CI750 from "C" to "D". There was no
hardware ECO required. This was a microcode change only. The
CI780.BIN file changed from V3.0 to V4.0 - console media BE-T204I-DE.
This fixed problems found during extensive in-house testing of very
large VAXclusters under specific conditions, where the CI750 interface
will sometimes incorrectly recover from CI error conditions.
Comments: An FCO was generated. It was recommended that the new
FCO be implemented on all CI750's and VAX8600's.
EQ-01364-01 - CI780.BIN Rev. V5.0 (11/750 console media)
CI750 Revision "E1"**
-------------------
o Creation Date - July, 1986
This revision changes the CI750 from "D1" to "E1".
This revision change involved an ECO to the L0101 as follows:
L0101-MK009 - 1. Numerous Functional Errors ("arbitration
timeout", "internal queue retry error").
2. Need a variable sanity timer.
3. Need to check the "valid" bit when
referencing a cached buffer descriptor.
4. Correct documentation errors.
This is a microcode and ROM change. Requires CI780.BIN V7.0
BE-T204I-DE.
Comments: An FCO was generated which brought the CI750 to Rev "E1".
This FCO, CI750-E1-I004, should have been installed on
all CI750s.

diagnostics)
FA-04706-01 FCO Document (included with all EQ kits)
L0101-MK010 - 1. Paths crossed, REQID sent on path A,
response on path B.
2. Clock the transmit enable flop correctly
to prevent cluster hang.
Rework is two etch cuts and two wire adds. This ECO brings
the L0101 to Rev "K1". Module Part Revs "J1" and "K1" are both
acceptable in CI750 Rev "E1".
CI750 Revision "F1"
-------------------
o Creation Date - September, 1988
This revision changes the CI750 from "E1" to "F1"
This revision change involved the following eco:
L0009-MK003 - 1. CMI control state machine selects
incorrect command/address and
function/vector register data onto
the bus during certain state
transitions. Problem observed after
detection of CRD Memory error by the
port CMI interface and may result in
data corruption.
Comments: An FCO is being generated from the L0009-MK003 ECO.
FCO is CI750-I006. This will be done in all CI750s.
FCO estimated to begin September, 1988.
EQ-01497-01 Contains microcode ROM.
EQ-01497-02 Contains L0009 Module Rev B2 or C3.
FA-04792-01 Contains FCO document.
NOTE: Rev "F1" may also include FCO CI750-I005 for clusters
containing 6 nodes and above. This FCO involves an eco
to the L0118 module as follows:
L0118-LK002 - Too many etch cuts and wires on board. New
etch rev requires extra jumpers and stake pins.
Implementation of FCO CI750-I005 began May, 1988.
CI750 Revision "H3"
------------------
o Creation date is May 1988.
o This revision changed the CI750 from "F" to "H".
o This revision documents the introduction of the LO118 module
Problem/Correction - N/A.
Quick Check - verify module is LO118.
Diagnostic Release 28 (EVNDX 28) contains the minimum usable diagnostics for
the LO118 module.
