UNIX Support Group

The UNIX Support Group (usually given as USG) was set up by Bell Labs in September, 1973, after it eventually determined that UNIX was the best operating system for the increasingly popular PDP-11. It decided to fund a small team to support UNIX for use within Bell Labs, something that the system's creators in the Research group were not really in a position to do. The USG was set up in Murray Hill; the supervisor of the group was Joe Maranzano, and the Department Head was Berkeley Tague.

Its system, USG UNIX, was eventually merged with several of the other UNIX variants within Bell - CB-UNIX and PWB/UNIX - (all of them by then based on Research's Unix Seventh Edition) to create UNIX System III.
