| The purpose of this document is to define the compatible revision levels of the |
| VAX 8820/8830/8840 kernels. Revision levels are tracked according to DEC Std. 68. |
| |
| |
| A team composed of Engineering, Manufacturing, and Customer Services will |
| review all changes and determine when the revisions in this document will |
| be changed. This document is under ECO control and will be updated by |
| Engineering via the normal ECO process. |
| |

| Higher revisions are compatible unless otherwise noted. |

| Part revisions are tracked according to DEC Standard 012 conventions. |
| Each part has an alphanumeric revision, up to a maximum of 4 digits. |
| When a part revision changes, the alpha character, numeric or both may |
| change: if the alpha character changes the new part is compatible with |
| and can replace earlier revisions - a "C1" can replace an "A1" and a "B1"; |
| if the numeric only changes, the new part is interchangeable and backwards |
| compatible - D1, D2, and D3 are interchangeable and can replace earlier |
| revisions. |

| HOW TO READ REVISION MATRICES |
| ----------------------------- |

| |
| This document is divided into two major sections: |
| |
| (1) Description of changes (History Page). |
| |
| This describes what parts/units were changed and why. |
| It will contain the following at a minimum: ECO #, |
| problem corrected, symptom, new part revision, quick |
| check, FCO # and any other comments that the team decides |
| is necessary. |
| |
| |
| (2) Matrices showing revision compatibilities. |
| |
| These matrices list the MINIMUM compatible revisions for |
| each unit (option) or combination of units (system). |
| Higher revisions are also compatible unless otherwise noted. |
| |
| (3) A new column will be added to each page when the kernel revision changes. |
| |
| |
| To determine compatible revisions, begin with the highest level matrix |
| to determine minimum compatible revisions for each combination of units |
| (system). Then, refer to the revision matrices for each unit (option) |
| to determine the revisions for the parts contained in that unit. |

| The System ID Register, Figure 1, on the 8820/8830/8840 machine is a mixture of hardware and firmware. The CPU type, |
| Processor Number and the K Rev are defined by firmware during system initialization. The Serial Number field is encoded |
| via jumpers on the CPU backplane containing the Console Interface Module. Refer to Figure 2 for location and numbering. |
