External links

Wikipedia style, which we generally follow, is to corral external links to an 'External links' section at the bottom, instead of including them in the body of the text. I don't know why they did it that way; it was started very early, before I joined, and I joined in August, 2003.

It was more habit than anything else to do this here (I happen to like it), but it does have its advantages: they often decay over time, so having them all in one place makes it easy to check them, and replace them with Internet Archive links when needed. (I wonder if we should change style to link directly to IA copies, in general? I'll have to ask, see what people think. Although having the original URL generally makes it easy to find the IA copy when the original goes away.) Jnc (talk) 17:42, 6 February 2024 (CET)

I am willing to do that & keep external links in the dedicated External Links section. The Windows 1.0 Premiere Edition page is an interesting case because it is a mirror of this page https://www.betaarchive.com/wiki/index.php/Windows_1.0/Premiere_Edition which also has the links inline. One thing I'm not sure on this site is if we use the inline ref citations, ex: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Inline_citation#Ref_tags Flx (talk) 18:27, 6 February 2024 (CET)

We don't really bother with individual source citations, as noted here. I mean, nobody is going to object if people add individual references (and we have had contributors who did do that, as here), we just don't put it high in our priorities. I think this makes sense; when I look at how many things have no content at all - and how few people we have adding content - it's hard to escape the conclusion that that is a correct prioritization. That's not cast in concrete, though; I would certainly listen to a reasoned discussion that we should do more.

I generally try and make sure that 'Further reading' and 'External links' do contain all the sources that I used to create an article, but I don't bother with individual citations.

I seem to also recall that the whole {Reference} system from Wikipedia isn't installed here; if so, if you'd like to use that, you'll have to talk to Tore about installing it. Jnc (talk) 19:34, 6 February 2024 (CET)
