Resolution

Resolution is a measure of how detailed the output (on a display) or input (on a scanner) of an is. It is given in 'pixels/distance', where distance is given in an appropriate system of units - e.g. 'centimeter' in locations which use the SI system.
The 'distance' is often dropped when discussing a particular device; e.g. the resolution of displays on contemporary laptops is often given as "1920x1080". In these cases, resolution' means 'size in pixels', an additional, new, meaning for the term.
