The Network File System (usually given as the acronym, NFS) from Sun Microsystems allowed machines to share file systems across a data network. It was not specific to any operating system, and allowed machines running disparate operating system to inter-operate. Sun placed the specifications in the public domain, and encouraged other vendors to implement NFS, to allow easy inter-operation.
