IPv4 is the roughly the fourth specified version of the Internet Protocol; still in common use, it was the version of IP in use throughout the early growth of the Internet. The IETF later attempted to replace it with a new. 'improved' version (IPv6), but although they managed to get the latter fairly widely deployed, it did not drive out IPv4.
