JOSS — JOHNNIAC Open Shop System — was a time-sharing system created at RAND Corporation. Users interacted with the system using an interactive programming language vaguely similar to BASIC. The first version ran on the JOHNNIAC computer. The next, JOSS II, ran on a PDP-6. There was a less successful JOSS III running on an IBM System/370.
JOSS influenced TELCOMP, STRINGCOMP, and FILECOMP developed at BBN, and these languages in turn influenced MUMPS. JOSS also influenced DEC's FOCAL.
