The VAX 8600 series were the successors to the initial VAX-11/780 machines of the VAX family. Their goal was to have about four times the performance of the /780, at about the same cost, and become the top of the VAX line.

The systems were internally structured around the main memory controller (the Mbox). Two Synchronous Backplane Interconnects, compatible with those of the /780, connected to the Mbox via the 'adapter bus ('A bus'), and provided I/O to the system. The CPU was built out of ECL gate arrays.
