Revision levels are tracked according to DEC Standard 068. A team composed of Engineering, Manufacturing and Customer Services will review all changes and determine when the revisions in this document will be changed. This document is under ECO control and will be updated by Engineering via the normal ECO process. This RM document can be obtained in the following manner: (1) Order from Engineering Design Services by P/N RM-11785. (2) VAX Library Microfiche (3) ENET - VOLKS::CLUSTER$REV:785REV.DOC (Latest version always available) (4) Speed Bulletin #407 This document will be updated when an ECO is generated to a part that causes the revision of the unit and/or combination of units to change. Note that some 11/780 options that are used on the 11/785 do not follow the revision tracking scheme as outlined in this document. These are older products that will be converted to DEC Standard 012 and 068 over time. 1.1 REVISION CONTROL ---------------- Definitions: Part - FRU (module, backplane, power supply, etc.) Unit - Option (FP785, KA785) Combination of Units - System (11/785) All revisions noted in this document are MINIMUM REVISIONS. Higher revisions are compatible unless otherwise noted. 1.1.1 Part Revisions -------------- Part revisions are tracked according to DEC Standard 012 conventions. Each part has an alphanumeric revision, up to a maximum of 4 digits. When a part revision changes, the alpha or numeric characters may change. If the alpha character changes, the new and old revisions are not interchangeable. If the numeric only changes, the parts are interchangeable within the common alpha revisions, i.e. D1, D2 and D3 are all interchangeable. Note that only the alpha character will be tracked for part revisions in this document. Minor revision (numeric) changes will not be noted. - 3 - 1.1.2 Unit Revision ------------- Unit and combination of unit revisions will be tracked via an alpha character only; minor revision (numeric) changes will not be noted. 2.0 SYSTEM ID REGISTER ------------------ The System ID Register on the 11/785 is implemented in the same way as the 11/780 SID register. It is accessible, as in the 11/780, by reading ID register 03 or internal processor register number 3E from the console. (See Section 1.2.1) The register format for the 11/785 is as follows: 31 24 23 22 21 18 17 15 14 12 11 00 +---------------------------------------------------------------+ | SYSTEM | XX | XX | N | PLANT | SERIAL NUMBER | | TYPE | |----------------| | | | | | SYSTEM REVISION| | | +---------------------------------------------------------------+ 2.1 How to read SID Register ------------------------ Example: (underlined portion is what you type) >>> E/ID 3 ---- - ID 00000003 018032B2 * -or- >>> E/I 3E --- -- I 0000003E 018032B2 * * (Sys type = 780; CPU type = 785; Sys rev = 0; plant = Franklin; last 3 digits represent serial number) 2.2 How to set SID Register ----------------------- KA785 Backplane Jumpers (located on the upper right hand corner of backplane) A UU A UU A UU A UU _______________ _______________ _______________ _______________ |:::::::::::::| |:::::::::::::| |:::::::::::::| |:::::::::::::| --------------- --------------- --------------- --------------- B J10 VV B J11 VV B J12 VV B J13 VV - 4 - Remove Jumper to Assert bit. (bit 23 set=785, clear=780) 2. distinctions between manufactured 785s and 785 upgrades. (Manufacturing Plant Field, 5 = 785 upgrade, 3 or 4 = 785 original build) 3. unique System ID Register for all 780s, 785s, and 785 upgrades manufactured by the corporation. 2.3 How to set SID Register for 11/785 Upgrades ------------------------------------------- Installation of a 785 Upgrade will require that Field Service set the serial number jumpers on the new backplane to equal the serial number of the 780 being replaced. This is done by removing from the KA785 J13-V through J13-VV any jumpers necessary to duplicate the jumper configuration of the KA780 J13-V through J13-VV. This will give the KA785 the same serial number as the removed KA780 serial number. 3.0 11/785 UPGRADES (11/780 TO 11/785) ---------------------------------- All 11780 systems that are to be upgraded to an 11785 or 11/780-5 must be at a minimum hardware rev 04. In addition, the following minimum revisions are required: RH780 Rev 04, AA1 or B1 MS780-C Rev 1B DW780 Rev 1B (Rev C1 for UDA50s) CI780- Rev C1 All existing revisions of all other VAX options are compatible. NOTE: RH780 REV 04, AA1, B1: The RH780 Rev 4 or AA1 is the minimum required for all 11785 systems. RH780 AA1 is the same as Rev 04. AA1 implements Part Revision. Rev B1 replaces the M8277 module with the M8274 module which is needed for high speed RP07s. Note that the 11/780, 11780-5 and 11/785 systems may contain a mixture of RH780 Rev 04 (AA1) and RH780 Rev B1 with no compatibility problems. - 6 - 4.0 HOW TO READ REVISION MATRICES ----------------------------- This document is broken into two major sections: (1) Description of changes (History Page). This describes what parts/units were changed and why. It will contain the following at a minimum: ECO #, Problem corrected, symptom, new part revision, quick check, FCO # and any other comments that the team decides is necessary. (2) Matrices showing revision compatibilities. These matrices list the MINIMUM compatible revisions for each unit (option) or combination of units (system). Higher revisions are also compatible unless otherwise noted. To determine compatible revisions, begin with the highest level matrix to determine minimum compatible revisions for the combination of units (system). Then, refer to the revision matrices for each unit (option) to determine the revisions for the parts contained in that unit. As stated previously, this document does NOT track the numeric portion of the part revision. For instance, a part could have three usable and shippable revisions - A1, A2 and A3 - but only "A" will show on the chart--all three revisions are interchangeable. 5.0 UNIT REVISION MATRICES This section contains the rev matrix charts and history pages for the 11/785 kernal options - 11/785, KA785, KC785, MS780-C/E/H. The matrices or revision charts for other VAX options that can be used on the 11/785 are attached at the end of this document. - 7 - 5.1 11/785 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | OPTION NAME | | | 11785-AA-AD | | |----------------------------------------------------------------------------| | 11785-TW001 11785 Revision "00" | | ----------- | | This is the initial introduction of the Revision matrix on the 11785. | | This R.M. represents the minimum system rev. level "00" at FCS, June 1984.| | Minimum EVNDX to support Rev. 00 is 16 which went out with each system/ | | upgrade. | | | | To set the SID register for system revision 00 bits 15:21 should be clear;| | therefore, corresponding jumpers should be installed. CI780-E1 REVISION SUMMARY ------------------------- o Creation date was September 1985 (from Manufacturing). o Option Revision "E1" involves a change to the CI microcode only. New microcode is Rev 5. Problem fixed: extensive in-house testing of very large VAXclusters showed that under specific conditions the CI780 interface will sometimes incorrectly recover from CI error conditions. o An FCO is being implemented to upgrade all CI780 options to Rev "E1". Rev 5 microcode can be obtained in two ways: 1. Over the ENET - Copy VOLKS::CLUSTER$REV:CI780.BIN + 2. Order EQ kits as follows: From: To: Order: ---- -- ----- CI780 Rev 01 CI780 Rev E1 EQ-01344-01 (ROMS) (ucode Rev 2) (ucode Rev 5) EQ-01365-01 (780 ucode) EQ-01365-02 (785 " ) (ucode Rev 3) (ucode Rev 5) EQ-01365-02 (785 " ) CI780 Rev E1 CI780 Rev E1 EQ-01365-01 (780 ucode) (ucode Rev 4) (ucode Rev 5) EQ-01365-02 (785 " ) - 35 - CI780-F1 REVISION HISTORY ------------------------- o Creation date is July 1986 - Manufacturing implementation date. This revision change involved an ECO to the L0101 module bringingthe module rev to "J1". *PROBLEM/CORRECTION L0101-MK009 1.numerous functional errors ("arbitration timeout", internal queue retry error"). 2.Need a variable sanity timer. 3.Need to check the "valid" bit when referencing a cache buffer description. 4.Correct documentation errors. Correction is V7.0 CI microcode and 6 proms. Note that the L0101 rev J1 and CI780.bin rev 7.0 must be used together. An FCO is being implemented to upgrade all CI780's (CI780-F1-I-005). L0101 MK010 - 1. Paths crossed, "reqid" sent on path a, response on path B. 2. Clock the transmit enable flop correctly to prevent cluster hung. This ECO involves two etch cuts and two wire adds. It brings the L0101 to rev "K1". Revs "J1" and "K1" are both acceptable in CI780 rev "F1". CI780-AA/AB REVISION H1 ----------------------- o Creation date is June 1987. o This revision changed the CI780 from "F" to "H". o This revision change involved an eco to the L0100 module bringing the module rev to "E". PROBLEM/CORRECTION L0100-MK006 1. Original 140 mhz clock and associated hardware has tendency to drift off frequency. 2. Existing wires caused by eco #mk005 cause extensive manufacturing costs. the following corrections are implemented by this eco: 1. Change 140 mhz crystal to new hybrid oscillator (p/n 18-23940-01) and delete unnecessary hardware. 2. Phase in new etch to remove wire's on module. - 35 - L0100-MK005 1. Major problems in the interface which would be highly visible in large cluster configurations. These problems include the following: A) CI 20 self directed packet problem. B) Arbitration problem. C) SYNC detect pal could latch up under a flood condition. D) Implementation of the xtend hdr jumper was incorrect. E) Acknowledge turn-around and basic slot time causing excessive collisions on the wire. F) Correct trailer time to meet the spec. 1. The following corrections are implemented by this eco: A) CRC byte counter reset now with (ILIB ABORT + INIT FNC L) * - (ILIB INIT L). B) First try flag is now incorporated to provide real arbitration where the node is now synchronized on loss of carrier and will obey the rules of dual round robin arb. C) New pal will be incorporated. D) XTEND hdr jumper now functional. E) Install a change to make alter delta time jumper select A BASIC SLOT TIME OF 7 TO 10 CLOCK TICKS. *QUICK CHECK - (Module REV E1) L0100 with wire from a) e65.13 and E177.13 B) E65.11 and E177.9 DIAGNOSTIC EVCGD, V1.2 required for this eco. Updated in diagnostic Release 26 (EVNDX 26). L0100 jumper W1 (module rev E1) or S3 (module rev E2) indicates the following conditions: A) Jumper (W1) installed between e177 socket pins 11 and 12, or switch (s3) open, disabled: 1) This makes the L0100 downwards compatible with rev D L0100 modules, by maintaining the basic slot count to the existing count of seven (7) ticks, acknowledge turn-around remains the same as the original rev D L0100's, and the trailer extension is not enabled. With these eliminated, the eco'ed L0100 (rev E) will maintain form, fit and function as the non-eco'ed (rev D) modules. However, it should be noted that the following fixes will still be installed and be functional in rev E, while in the disabled position: new sync detect pal, CI20 fix, xtend hdr jumper, and XMIT status bit 3. - 36 - B) Jumper (W1) installed between E177 socket pins 9 and 10, or switch (s3) closed, enabled: 1) Basic slot time is now implemented to ten (10) ticks. 2) Ack turn-around change fully implemented. 3) Trailer extension by two (2) bytes, fully functional. 4) Arbitration and first try flag full implementation. 5) New SYNC detect pal, xtend hdr jumper, CI20 and XMIT status bit 3, will still be fully functional as above. CI780-AA/AB REVISION J1 ----------------------- o Creation date is May 1988. o This revision changed the CI780 from "H" to "J". o This revision documents the introduction of the L0118 in place of the LO100. PROBLEM/CORRECTION - N/A QUICK CHECK - Verify LO118 is installed. DIAGNOSTIC RELEASE 28 (EVNDX 28). Contains the minimum usuable diagnostics for the L0118 module. \\VAX_REV_MATRIX
