First there was hack. Then came nethack. The name comes from the game being a 'hack and slash' and has nothing to do with hacking. It's largely inspired by Dungeons and Dragons, and influenced many RPG games in the 1980's that were tile based. It was given widespread releas with the inclusion in the 4.2 BSD operating system.
