Algol Extended for Design (its informal name; formally, it was Automated Engineering Design - both usually given as the acronym, AED) was a programming language for systems, created at MIT, and based (as the name implies) on ALGOL. Work on the underlying project started in 1959, and the first AED compiler was begun in 1963.
It was an extension of the ALGOL 60 version of ALGOL, with the addition of structures (which the project called "plexes"), pointers, and dynamic allocation. It was originally created to run on the IBM 7090, under CTSS; it later ran on the IBM System/360.
One notable project written in AED was the first BCPL compiler.
