Talk:WAITS on-disk file structure
From Computer History Wiki
Article name
Are you all OK with renaming this to WAITS file system, to follow the naming system elsewhere (SITS file system, UNIX file system, etc)? Jnc (talk) 15:55, 13 June 2023 (CEST)
- My intent was for this article to just document the data present on the disk, and not delve into a full discussion of the file system. Hence the emphasis on on-disk. Larsbrinkhoff (talk) 19:36, 13 June 2023 (CEST)
- OK, understood; makes sense. (But note that UNIX file system mostly just covers 'the data present on the disk', and not e.g. the interface seen by the user, etc. Maybe we should rename that one to UNIX on-disk file structure? :-) But of course, the potential semantics available to users through the file system interface is in the end limited by the data present on the disk.) - I do think that having separate "on-disk" articles would make some degree of sense. However, having slept on it I'm now inclined to say "go ahead, change the name if you like". I'm not overly concerned about the exact naming of things, as long as the important information is there. Larsbrinkhoff (talk) 07:34, 14 June 2023 (CEST)
- Let me ponder it for a few days. (My wife is getting ready for a trip to see the grand-children, and everything here is upside-down, and I haven't had any quiet time to really consider it at leisure; and for this project, there's no reason to rush.) On the one hand, it would be good to have a consistent naming system; on the other, our 'file system' articles mostly do talk about just 'what's on the disk', not 'how do the system and user interact with it' - although there is a fair amount of 'why' in several of them (e.g. in BSD Fast File System).
