The MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (usually referred to as the AI Lab) was an early, and influential, artificial intelligence research group. Its roots lie in an informal group of AI researchers who got together in 1959; when Project MAC started in 1963, they were included as a section, focused on research in AI. It formally became an independent laboratory by splitting from Project MAC in 1970.
It was housed in the building at 545 Technology Square, where Project MAC had been housed. They shared the machine room on the 9th floor (almost the entire floor had raised floor) with the remants of Project MAC (which had mostly formed themselves into the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science, usually called 'LCS'); the AI Lab had offices on the 8th floor (and elsewhere, eventually).
It eventually re-united with LCS in 2003, forming the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
