DEC Software Media, Software License, Software Service, and Software Manual Order Codes

There are two formats whose use overlaps in time:

  • 7-Character Format XXXXX-XX
  • 9-Character Format XX-XXXXX-XX

The latter was introduced in 1988 for Software Products and Services for new processors while Software Products and Services for processors already introduced remained in the old 7-Character Format.

7-Character Format XXXXX-XX

Samples:

1st Letter = Type of Software:

2nd Letter = Processor Identifier:

3rd to 5th Letter = Unique Product Identifier (UPI)

Exception: Digital Classified Software, 2nd letter = A, G, I, U

6th Letter = Product Type:

  • 1 - Dispatch Subscription Service
  • 2 - Dispatch Subscription
  • 3 - Self-Maintenance Service
  • 4 - Source Updates Service
  • 5 - Startup Service Level I
  • 6 - Additional Telephone Support Center Contact
  • 7 - Startup Service Level II
  • 8 - Basic Service
  • 9 - DECsupport Service
  • A - Single-use License, Binaries, Documentation, Warranty
  • B - Startup Service Level III
  • C - License and Key, no Support
  • D - License only
  • E - Source License and Distribution
  • F - Source Distribution and Listings / Microfiche
  • G - Documentation Only (-GZ)
  • H - Distribution and Documentation
  • I - Installation Service
  • J - PPL - Periodic Payment License (VAXcluster)
  • K - Documentation Service
  • L - Sources Update
  • M - Location-use Source License, Microfiche List
  • N - Source Distribution
  • P - No License, Binaries only
  • Q - Single-use License for VAXcluster Node
  • R - No License, Binaries Documentation
  • S - DECstart Service
  • T - Update
  • U - Single-Use License
  • V - For Service Delivery Only
  • W - Warranty Update / For Service Delivery Only
  • X - Single-use Sources License, Sources and Binaries, Documents, Warranty
  • Y - Single-use Sources License, Sources and Binaries, Documents
  • Z - Defense Acquisition Regulation/NASA Marking, Maintenance Service

7th Letter = Software Medium:

9-Character Format XX-XXXXX-XX

With the advent of VMS V5 and as new VAX processors were introduced, the Software Products and Services used the new Software Model Number, a 9-character format.

Cluster Licensing

Samples:

1st and 2nd Letter = Unknown (usually "QL")

3rd to 5th Letter = Unique Product Identifier (UPI)

6th and 7th Letter = CC (Country Code):

8th and 9th Letter = Cluster License Points:

1st and 2nd Letter = Software Product Type

  • QA - Software documentation, media, and other software kits
  • QB - Packaged software components
  • QC - Software subassemblies
  • QL - Software licenses (DEC processor tier, and platform licenses)
  • QM - Software licenses (PC & standalone third-party license agreements)
  • QP - Packaged software licenses
  • QQ - Country information components
  • QR - Assigned software uses
  • QS - Professional services project and consulting services
  • QT - Software product services
  • QU - Software product services
  • QW - Cross-functional service packages (CFSP)
  • QX - Diagnostic/maintenance tools licenses
  • QY - Diagnostic/maintenance tools services
  • QZ - Diagnostic/maintenance tools documentation, media, and other hardware information kits
  • Q2 - Software application products: license, media & documentation, and SPS
  • Q3 - Software application products: license, media & documentation, and SPS

3rd to 5th Letter = Unique Product Identifier (UPI)

6th Letter = Unknown (usually "A" or "G")

7th Letter = CPU Code:

  • D - VAX 8800, 6240, 8820
