The VAXstation 3100 was an improved (approximately three-four times faster than its predecessors) VAXstation intended for demanding graphics applications. It used the second generation of VAX CMOS chip-set technology, the same as in the MicroVAX 3500/3600 and VAXstation 3200/3500.

There were three basic models in the VAXstation 3100 range.

The VAXstation 3100 Model 30 was based on the CMOS-1 CVAX and performed at ~2.8VUPs. The VAXstation 3100 Model 40 was the same mainboard but in a slightly taller case, so it could accommodate more storage options.

The second generation VAXstation 3100 Model 38 was based on the CMOS-2 CVAX. The VAXstation 3100 Model 48 was again the same mainboard but in a slightly taller case.

The final member of the series was the Rigel-based VAXstation 3100 Model 76. This doubled the performance to 7.6 VUPs.

Depending on the configuration, it could be a disk-less network node, a stand-alone work-station, or also as a server for up to seven other VAXstations. An optional MS-DOS 'software coprocessor' allows it to run un-modified PC applications at full speed.
