The PDP-11/40E was a modified version of the basic PDP-11/40, produced in small numbers at [[CMU] for use in the C.mmp multi-processor system, which ran the HYDRA operating system. It added a writeable microcode extension (adding 1K micro-words to the original 256), hardware for general field shift and extraction, and extension of the microcode width from 56 bits to 80. The extra hardware uses the CPU backplane slots normally used for the KE11-E and KE11-F options.
